The Federal Communications Commission and major broadband internet &
cable television providers have teamed up to provide low income internet access to income qualified households and families that are considered low income.

This measure is in response to the growing 100 million households that are
currently without high speed internet access. The commission agreed that a lack of internet access limits the ability to search for jobs, and educational
opportunities which are usually readily accessible to those with internet access.

In addition to providing professional low income internet services, other major participants such as Microsoft will provide discount computer bundles for as low as $250. These packages will come equipped with pre-installed software for no additional cost.

According to a recent article in USA Today and New York Times newspapers, the largest gap between those with and without internet is between younger and older households: An overwhelming majority of those between 45 and 64 do not have internet access, while younger generations do. When adjusting for income, Black and Hispanic households had fewer families with broadband access.

In order to qualify for the low income internet access discount, residents must meet certain requirements. Those with children that participate in free or reduced price school lunch programs, section 8, W.I.C, PG&E low income assistance, Safelink wireless, and other state-run assistance and low income subsidy and utility assistance programs usually qualify easily.
